average speed

WHAT IS SPEED?

Speed is a measure of how fast an object is moving.
When we talk about average speed, we are looking at how fast an object moves over a certain distance.
We can calculate average speed by dividing the total distance traveled by the total time taken.

Let’s take an example of a car travelled from point A to point B. The distance between points A and B is 1000 m, and it took the car 250 seconds to cross.

To find the average speed, we divide the distance traveled (1000 m) by the total time (250 seconds). So, the average speed of the car is 4 m/s.

If a person runs 1000 m in 500 seconds, his average speed would be 2 m per second.

If a plane flies 4,000 km in 5 hours, its average speed would be 800 km per hour or 222.22 m/s.

Remember, average speed is the distance travelled per unit of time. We calculate it by dividing the total distance travelled by the total time taken.

Tasks

Notes

  1. Speed: how fast the object moves – the distance travelled per unit time, without considering direction.

  2. Average Speed: the toal distance travelled divided by the total time taken.

  3. Distance – The total length of the path travelled by an object, regardless of direction.
